The Elder in Residence Program brings to campus every spring a nationally-known American Indian leader. The program gives students a chance to learn from the experiences and wisdom of the elder.

Linda Oxendine of Pembroke, North Carolina, received a B.A. from Chapel Hill in 1967 and went on to earn a Ph.D. and become chair of the Department of American Indian Studies at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She has written numerous articles and books about American Indian and Lumbee languages and history.
