The UNC American Indian Center will offer seven paid summer internships to American Indian students living in the tribal communities receiving Healthy Native North Carolinians (HNNC) Community Awards. Each community will host one high school or recent graduate intern per summer for six weeks in the tribal community. Interns have the opportunity to assist tribal community partner staff in implementing projects that align with healthy eating and active living activities. Student interns are required to attend three professional development trainings at UNC Chapel Hill during the summer. Time spent at these trainings count towards the six-week program. This internship builds human capital in tribal communities as students grow professionally.

- The six-week internship program period is June 12- July 21, 2017, with a Certificate Ceremony on July 21
- Tribes and Urban Indian Organizations will select their own interns. Intern cannot be a direct relative (child or grandchild) of the tribal leadership or of their Mentor Task Supervisor.
- Students must be high school rising juniors, seniors, recent high school graduates, or current college students
- Student interns will receive a $2,000 stipend for their six-week summer service paid directly from the tribe/organization to the intern from the HNNC grant (stipend shall cover time and travel to community work sites and Chapel Hill trainings)
- Intern tasks are project-based, able to be completed within the summer, and directly connected to the community’s healthy eating/active living initiatives
- To apply, students will submit an application online along with a one-page essay to the AIC, which will then be sent to the Community Partners for selecting their interns. Essay Prompt: Why do you want to be a Healthy Native North Carolinians intern? What lessons do you hope to learn?
- The six-week internship program will allow students to serve in the community and includes three visits to UNC Chapel Hill over the course of the summer for professional development trainings
- By submitting an internship application, students give permission for their application to be shared with the tribes/organizations for internship selection
- All student applicants will be notified by May 1, 2017 of selection status
