Tribal Leadership Workshop
The American Indian Leadership Workshop will link the University with American Indian communities in the state by providing opportunities for members of those communities to attend two day sessions that focus on strengthening the Indian communities in North Carolina by addressing basic issues in he exercise of tribal sovereignty, social concerns such as health and education, economic development, and cultural preservation.
The Leadership Workshop will bring in nationally prominent experts, local policy makers, local Indian leaders, and University faculty members to address issues. The audience for the Workshop will include leaders of tribal communities and members of those communities who are interested in learning more about social, political, and cultural issues. Students at the University who are members of tribal communities, and non-Indian students who want to learn more about the status of Indian tribes in the state will also be able to attend. It is projected that the Workshop will held at least once a semester.
The objective of the Workshop is to give Indian leaders, both present and potential, the skills they need to deal with the increasingly complex nature of Indian relationships with local, state, and federal agencies as they strengthen their capacity to exercise their tribal sovereignty and address issues of concern to Indian communities.
