Kamryn Locklear, a Robeson County native and a member of the Lumbee Tribe, is a UNC Alumni who spent her undergraduate years immersed in both her studies and her community. Kamryn accomplished a Bachelors of Science in Psychology as well as a minor in Spanish for the Health Professions in preparation for her goals to attend medical school. As she joined Carolina, it was evident that Kamryn was a hard working and academically skilled student, entering her freshman year as a Chancellor’s Science Scholar as well as working with the Recruitment Committee for the program. Along with that, she spent the majority of her time outside of class working as a research assistant in the Department of Nutrition in the Gillings School of Public Health under Dr. Stephanie Martin. Not only was she a research assistant, but two of the papers that she collaborated with Dr. Martin on are being published in Maternal & Child Nutrition.
Along with her experience with the Gillings School of Public Health, Kamryn also interned at the UNC American Indian Center during the summer of 2017, studied abroad in Sevilla, Spain, during the summer of 2018, presented her research in Hawaii, and also held an internship at John Hopkins School of Medicine summer 2019! Kamryn has a great list of accomplishments and love for her community, and she shows the wonders that Native students are capable of.
As a true UNC Alumni, Kamryn has mentioned a memory that will always stay in her mind of going to the iconic UNC vs Duke game her freshman year and seeing Michael Jordan with his infamous “the ceiling is the roof” moment. Along with memories of the game, she recalled many fond memories of her time at UNC, such as taking walks on campus with her friends, chatting while laying on the grass, and studying in her favorite spot, the Health Science Library.
As of now, Kamryn just recently graduated this May from Duke University School of Medicine with a Master of Biomedical Sciences degree, where she works as a research assistant while applying to medical school this summer. We cannot wait to see what the future has in store for her!
