Call for Applications! Intersectional Student or Staff/Faculty-led Projects.

Alliance is a new collaborative entity formed through the relationships among the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History, the American Indian Center, the Carolina Latinx Center, and the Asian American Center at UNC.   

Alliance is offering a second round of funding for grant proposals for new Intersectional Student/Staff/Faculty Projects (ISP). This grant is made possible by a generous gift from an anonymous donor for the purpose of fostering deeper relationships among the four academic and community engagement centers. Alliance encourages the submission of any project that provides for an intellectually stimulating and critical experience in the interest of the entire campus, especially projects that respond to the many disparities that continue to permeate social structures. 

We hope this will promote collaborative projects that address the challenges faced by communities of color, particularly intersectional dimensions of identity and social justice.

We hope this call for proposals will do the following:  

1. Form collaborations and relationships among students, staff, faculty, and the local community  
2. Generate critically constructed, detailed projects that seek to build solidarity 
3. Provide an opportunity to consider the role of UNC as a public institution in engaging with its community, both local and global 

The Alliance is offering of up to $5000 (though we anticipate most grants will be for less). We are doing a single call this fall, so ISPs may be led by students or by faculty/staff; student grants and faculty/staff grants will be evaluated in separate pools. Funds must be spent during the 2022-23 academic year.

Applicants should also consider the following guidelines:

• Projects are required to be intersectional in their approach, not limited to the study of one particular community of color/indigenous community.
• Type of project may vary widely: events, research/creative activity and publications, screenings, service partnership, etc. are all eligible
  
• Interdisciplinarity and collaboration are highly valued
• Priority will be given to new projects/collaborations or new ventures of existing units/teams, rather than funds for standing programs
  

In the spirit of promoting collaboration across communities, applicants are encouraged to discuss their proposal with representatives from two of the centers, listed below

To apply:

You will be asked to submit an abstract (500-2000 words) outlining the project; in your project abstract, please include the following:  

• Audience, context, and purpose for the project 
• A proposed date for implementation  
• A line-item budget 
• Additional sources of funding you have received or are applying for  

• Additional campus individuals, organizations, or community partners who have specifically agreed to collaborate on this project 

You will also need to attach the CV/resume of project leaders.

Please note that funding is not available for conference attendance.  

Criteria for evaluation: 

• Soundness and feasibility of the project
• Research design
• Detail and feasibility of budget
• Significance of the project’s potential contribution and impact 
• Novelty of the project’s contribution to campus/community dialogue and knowledge
• Level of collaboration among centers, student organizations, departments, programs and/or areas of study
