For Carolina sophomore Marcus Richardson (Haliwa-Saponi), sports have always been a part of his life. His love of sports began when his father, fellow Tar Heel Albert Richardson, introduced him to this world. Since the age of 4, he has been actually involved in a variety of sports from baseball to soccer to basketball.
Since his arrival at UNC, Marcus has been able to further his skills in sports by being a Junior Varsity Basketball player. He describes his time with the JV basketball time as “amazing” and that he has “made life-long friends and got to learn from some of the best coaches in the country.” Hopefully this will be one part of Marcus’s career as he aspires to be a member of the Varsity team at UNC. With his skills and determination, he certainly has a strong chance. When Marcus is not on the court, he practices another set of skills that he possesses: Photography and Digital Media.
Marcus, a double major in Advertisement/Public and American Indian and Indigenous Studies, is currently a Graphic Design Intern for UNC’s Women Basketball and has designed several graphics for the Carolina Indian Circle, one of the organizations Marcus is actively involved in. After college, Marcus hopes to work in the Sports Industry as an Art Director, eventually working up to becoming a Creative Director or Chief Creative Officer. His ultimate goal is to start a media agency to help improve representation of American Indian people in marketing and branding.
Whether he is on the court playing for UNC or taking photos for organizations, Marcus has shown the world what a Native student can do while attending one of the world’s leading institutions.
